Each of the six books about Samantha Parkington in the American Girls Series is described by following the links below. These stories tell about a girl growing up in 1904 at the turn of the new century in American's New England area. These books are beautifully illustrated. At the back of each book is a "A Peek into the Past" that includes photos, drawings, and sketches about people, places and things during this period of American History.

Recommended for Ages 7 and up. Note: Covers vary due to publishers changes. Stories are the same.

Book One - "Meet Samantha, An American Girl"

Meet Samantha, first story about an American Girl growing up in 1904 during the turn of the New American Century"Samantha Parkington is an orphan who lives with her rich grandmother in 1904. There are many servants in Grandmarys's busy, bustling household, but there is no one for Samantha to play with. That's why she's so excited when Nellie moves in next door. Nellie has come to work so that she can send money back to her family in the city. Samantha soon learns that Nellie's life is much different from her own. Even though their lives are different, the two girls become good friends. One day Samantha discovers that Jessie, the seamstress, is leaving. No one will tell her why. So she and Nellie plan a secret midnight adventure to find out."

Book Two - "Samantha Learns a Lesson, A School Story"

Samantha Learns a Lesson, second story about an American Girl growing up in 1904 during the turn of the New American Century"Samantha attends Miss Crampton's Academy, a private school for proper young ladies, where eveyone is buzzng about the upcoming speaking contest. Samantha is working hard to win the gold medal. But she has something else on her mind, too. She's worried about Nellie, the poor servant girl who has become her friend. She's trying to teach Nellie to read so the boys and girls at her school will stop caller her "dummy" and "ragbag." Samantha sets up a school in Grandmary's tower room and becomes Nellie's teacher. But Nellie teaches Samantha some very important lessons, too."

Book Three - "Samantha's Surprise, A Christmas Story"

Samantha's Surprise, third story about an American Girl growing up in 1904 during the turn of the New American Century"Samantha has high hopes for the best Christmas ever. Things start to go wrong when her Uncle Gard announces he is bringing the beautiful Cornelia home for the holidays. The household goes into a dither, and in all the confusion, no one pays much attention to Samantha and her private wish for the beautiful doll in the window at Schofield's Toy Store. Samantha blames Cornelia for ruining the holidays. But when Christmas morning finally comes, Samantha has more than one surpirse waiting for her."

Then Agnes and Agatha, Cornelia's ten-year-old sisters, save the day with an invitation to visit New York City. Samantha loves the twins' lively, carefree attitude and can't wait to go - especially since the trip will incude a stop at the fanciest ice cream parlor in town. But when the girls carelessly break some rules, they suddenly find themselves racing dangerously through the big city and the path they take leads to surprising discoveries."

Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia have brought the mischievous twins Agnes and Agatha with them. One day Samantha and the twins find a sketchbook made by Samantha's mother. It shows them something Samantha had forgotten -- a waterfall she visited with her parents before they drowned in a boating accident. Using the sketchbook as a map, Samantha and the twins head off. When their secret exploration puts them in the middle of a dangerous storm, Samantha must save the day."

Changes for Samantha, sixth story about an American Girl growing up in 1904 during the turn of the New American Century"Times change for Samantha when she moves to New York City to live with Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia. They change for Nellie, Samantha's servant friend in Mount Bedford, too. But Nellie's changes aren't as happy as Samantha's, and Nellie has to find work again. When her friend disappears, Samantha thinks Nellie has been lost forever. But after a long and scary search, Samantha finds Nellie in a New York orpahanage. The orphanage is not a good place for Nellie, so the girls plan a daring escape."
